Children at Addenbrookes Hospital were thrilled this week by a surprise visit from ice skating legend Robin Cousins MBE, organised through Stamford-based charity Anna’s Hope, the East of England’s leading children’s brain tumour charity.
The former Olympic ice skating champion and Head Judge on ITV’s ‘Dancing on Ice’, was in Cambridge in his capacity as creator of the new Holiday on Ice show ‘ ‘ ‘TROPICANA’ that comes to the region in February 2012.
Every year Holiday on Ice donates money to children’s charity Anna’s Hope, which supports children and young people from across the East of England region with brain tumours and contributes towards funding for rehabilitation and research into their causes, treatment and cure. This includes funding a Paediatric Neuro Oncology Specialist nurse at Addenbrookes, where many of the children receive treatment. Robin told us, “This was a fantastic opportunity to visit the ward at Addenbrookes Hospital where the Anna’s Hope story began, and to see how the money raised by the charity is used to directly benefit the young patients receiving treatment there.
“It’s good to know the money raised through Holiday on Ice is helping to give real support children and their families, particularly during rehabilitation after treatment ”
Anna’s Hope founder, Carole Hughes, whose own three-year old daughter Anna was the inspiration behind the charity, told us what visiting the show means to the children who are well enough to attend, “For many the show is a welcome relief from their gruelling treatment and it gives them special quality time with their families. Thanks to the generosity of Holiday on Ice they will have happy memories to cherish and cheer them up when times get tough.”

This year Anna’s Mummy Carole Hughes ran with Anna’s Hope Nurse, Alison Mitchell and Harry Taylor from Addenbrookes Children’s Cancer ward.
